Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2/3 cup buffalo-style hot sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
8 ounces cream cheese, cut into cubes
1/2 cup ranch dressing
1/2 cup sour cream
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar, divided
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese (optional)
2 green onions, sliced
Tortilla chips, celery sticks and carrot sticks, for serving
Directions
- Put the chicken in a 4 to 6 quart slow cooker. Pour the hot sauce over it and sprinkle on the garlic powder and onion powder. Turn the chicken once to coat it.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours or on HIGH for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, until the chicken reaches 165°F and pulls apart easily.
- Shred the chicken right in the pot with two forks. Leave the juices in there. They carry most of the flavor.
- Add the cream cheese, ranch, sour cream, 1 cup of the cheddar and all of the mozzarella. Stir, cover and cook on LOW for 20 to 30 minutes, until the cheese melts. Stir again until smooth.
- Sprinkle the rest of the cheddar on top. Cover for 10 more minutes to melt it. Finish with green onions and blue cheese, if using. Switch to WARM and serve with chips and veggies.

What Makes a Great Game Day Dip
A good game day dip has to survive a long afternoon. People snack through the pregame, the first half, and halftime, so the dip needs to taste just as good at the third quarter as it did at kickoff. That is why slow cooker dips and thick baked dips are so popular. They hold their heat and do not turn runny.
It also needs to be easy to scoop. A dip that is too thick breaks chips, and one that is too thin drips everywhere. Cream cheese, shredded cheese, and sour cream give most of these recipes a texture that clings to a chip without snapping it.
How to Pick the Right Dip From This List
If you are feeding a big crowd and want to set it and forget it, go with the Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Dip or the Slow Cooker Sausage Queso. Turn the slow cooker to warm once they are melted and they will stay ready all game.
For a hot dip that comes out of the oven bubbling, try the Baked Jalapeño Popper Dip, the Cheesy Hot Spinach Artichoke Dip, or the Loaded Supreme Pizza Dip. The Bacon Cheeseburger Dip is the heartiest of the bunch and works almost like a meal.
Need something with no cooking at all? The 7-Layer Taco Dip is built cold in a dish and can be made the night before. The Caramelized French Onion Dip and the Cranberry Jalapeño Dip are also served cold. And if you want to end on something sweet, the Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Dip pairs well with graham crackers, apple slices, or gingersnaps.
Tips for Serving Dips at a Party
- Mix hot and cold. Two warm dips and one or two cold dips give people variety and keep your oven free.
- Plan on about 1/2 cup of dip per guest if dips are the main snack.
- Brown ground beef or sausage to 160°F before it goes into any dip.
- Keep hot dips at 140°F or above in a slow cooker. Cold dips should not sit out for more than 2 hours. Set the bowl in a larger bowl of ice to keep it cold longer.
- Offer more than chips. Celery, carrots, pretzel crisps, toasted baguette slices, and crackers all make good dippers.
Game Day Dip FAQ
Can I make these dips the day before?
Most of them, yes. Mix the baked dips and keep them covered in the fridge, then bake them the day of the game. Add about 10 minutes since they go in cold. The 7-Layer Taco Dip and the French onion dip actually taste better after a night in the fridge.
How do I reheat leftover dip?
Warm cheesy dips in the microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring between each one, or in a 350°F oven until hot. Add a splash of milk if the dip looks thick or oily.
How long do leftovers keep?
Store leftover dip in a sealed container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. Do not save dip that sat out for more than 2 hours.
