Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 2 large yellow onions, halved and thinly sliced

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced

  • Ruffled potato chips, for serving

Directions

  • Melt the butter with the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt. Stir to coat.
  • Cook for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the onions are soft and deep golden brown. If brown bits stick to the pan, add the water and scrape them up. Turn the heat down if the onions start to burn.
  • Let the onions cool for 10 minutes, then chop them into small pieces.
  • Beat the cream cheese until smooth. Stir in the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire, garlic powder, pepper and the rest of the salt. Fold in the onions and most of the green onions.
  • Cover and chill for at least 1 hour. Top with the rest of the green onions and serve with chips.
